Traditional thermal paper contains bisphenol A (BPA), which may migrate to the human body through skin contact, posing health risks from long-term exposure. Regulations in the EU, several US states, and multiple countries have restricted or banned BPA use in thermal paper, driving the industry toward eco-friendly alternatives.
Current mainstream BPA-free solutions use bisphenol S (BPS) or phenol-free developers. Premium BPA-free thermal paper should have color development sensitivity comparable to BPA-containing products, producing clear, durable black images under standard printing conditions. Paper specifications are typically 57mm and 80mm widths, with roll diameters of 50mm or 80mm depending on register models.
Cash register paper compliant with EU REACH regulations and FDA food contact material standards must pass migration testing and component analysis. Third-party certification from SGS or equivalent can serve as compliance proof. Some premium products also carry FSC forest certification, ensuring sustainable raw material sourcing.
Thermal paper should be stored away from light and moisture, as high temperatures and UV radiation accelerate coating aging and fading. Store below 25°C with relative humidity not exceeding 70%. For long-term preservation of printed receipts, scanning for archiving is recommended, as thermal images typically remain readable for only 1-3 years.
